個人生活吉姆·卡特于1982年1月，在國家劇院中舉行的理查德·艾爾的伙伴和洋娃娃的彩排上，與愛梅達·斯當頓相遇。當時卡特34歲，斯當頓26歲。斯當頓認為他太老了。據(jù)斯當頓說：“我們一起工作了一年，這不在沖動下的激情，而是慢熱型的愛情?！奔贰たㄌ睾蛺勖愤_·斯當頓于1983年結婚，并育有一女，名叫貝茜。貝茜是在斯當頓37歲時（1993）出生的。而后來貝茜在2010年加入了國家青年劇院。斯當頓如此評價卡特的演技：“他從來不是那種渴望扮演哈姆雷特的演員。也許是因為他是從馬戲團的表演中入行的吧。他總是我行我素?！彪S后，斯當頓驕傲而聲稱，在結婚21年后，她和卡特只分開過三個星期。他們還養(yǎng)了一只名叫莫莉的狗。另外，卡特是漢普斯特得板球俱樂部的董事長。該俱樂部的場地就在他家附近。2011年9月18日，他組織了漢普斯特得板球俱樂部（HCC）的板球名人賽。這是HCC該年的第三次慈善性質的板球名人賽。他還是個厲害的自行車運動員，并且已經(jīng)連續(xù)55年參賽，大部分情況下都是為了慈善目的。在2011年9月30日，卡特與其他25名選手去加納參加包含6天騎行，為期10天的旅行，目的是為了籌集善款為一個名叫塔福的貧窮小鎮(zhèn)提供干凈的水。他還有一個為這個賽事招募贊助者和捐款的網(wǎng)站。這是他的第十個慈善騎行。前九個是約旦、哥斯達黎加、老撾、越南、印度、納米比亞、智力、阿根廷和倫敦-巴黎兩次，這些籌得的款項都捐給了國家聾啞兒童協(xié)會。他原本打算籌集2750英鎊，最后竟達到8670英鎊。到2013年8月為止，卡特住在倫敦北部的西漢普斯特。

早年經(jīng)歷
卡特生于英格蘭北約克郡的哈羅蓋特（Harrogate,NorthYorkshire,England）。他的父親在英國國防部工作，母親是女性務農(nóng)民兵，后來成為學校秘書?？ㄌ剡M入哈羅蓋特的艾什維爾學院，并在畢業(yè)那年成為優(yōu)等生。后來他在蘇塞克斯大學學習法律，并成為剛成立的戲劇協(xié)會的重要人物。卡特在《SerjeantMusgrave'sDance》中扮演了主角。這部戲劇是在新建的GardnerArtsCentre劇院中第一部由學生制作的戲劇。
兩年后，他從大學輟學，并加入了布萊頓（Brighton）的一個實驗劇團。
